The warm summer days are a good time to do roof repairs brought about by any winter damage to your home. If your house was not entirely prepared during the storms, chances are, you may have a few problems pertaining to moisture. Here are ten easy post winter repairs that you might want to implement.

• Repair all water stained ceilings. Following a roof leak, there could be a brown or yellow stain on the ceiling. Don’t paint right over the stained areas. Seal the stain with a sealer before repainting the ceiling. You may touch up the area but for uniformity, you will most likely repaint the entire ceiling.

• Fix damaged or missing roofs. Look for damaged parts and trouble spots  only when you know you can do this safely and in good weather. Try to go into the attic during the day and check for signs of moisture. Look for pinpoints of daylight showing through.

• Fix damaged flashings. Most serious leaks aren’t due to damaged and missing shingles but because or broken or perhaps improperly installed flashing.

• Try to fix any siding leak. If you have spotted areas where your siding doesn’t hold nature out, then you will have to do some fixing.

• Clear downspouts and gutters. Water damage often happen as the end result of clogged gutters and downspouts. The warm hot days of summer give you the chance to clean them out for water to properly drain.

• Eliminate water in the basement and crawlspace. Has your basement or crawlspace been flooded? Make sure you dry them out to prevent dry rot. This will also help prevent moist air from being drawn into living space and promote mold growth.

• Make sure you fix storm doors. Buffeting winds will leave a door bent, broken or pulled away from the doorjamb. Get a professional to fix this for you.

• Block all air leaks. Indoors, the cold weather often becomes most evident by the appearance of cold drafts when air leaks through and around the windows. A good way to slow down the process is to replace weatherstripping.

• Fix any rotted woodwork. When wood sashes or sills from weather abuse, it can result to rot. You can use epoxy wood filler to these areas.

• Service your air conditioner and furnace. Forced air systems are built with filters that will catch debris and dust in the air before being recycled back into the room. Change filters regularly or as soon as they appear dirty.
